Jan III Sobieski is remembered above all for commanding the relief force at the Battle of Vienna in 1683, where a combined Christian army broke the Ottoman siege and effectively ended Turkish expansion into central Europe. The Polish commemorative program of the early 1980s returned to him repeatedly — this 1983 issue appearing exactly three centuries after that engagement.
Struck under the Polish People's Republic, a communist state invoking a Catholic military hero to satisfy domestic nationalist sentiment while Soviet oversight remained firmly in place.
