| Obverse description | The obverse features a large central rectangular cartouche containing a multi-line Latin epitaph inscription commemorating John I Albert, reading: CASIMIRI FILIUS TERTIOGENITUS VLADISLAI HUNGARIAE ET BOHEMIAE REGIS, AC DIVI CASIMIRI FRATER, SCYTHARUM VICTOR, CUM VALACHIS IN PRAELIO MINOR OBIIT THORUNII A.D.1501.AETAT:41. Below the cartouche, the Polish eagle emblem is displayed flanked by the date 2016, with the year split on either side of the eagle. The circular legend around the rim reads RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA · 50 ZŁ 2016 mw. The design is rendered in a refined medallic style with polished fields and frosted relief elements. |

Ioannes Albertus — Jan Olbracht in Polish — ruled from 1492 until his death in 1501, a reign largely consumed by a catastrophic 1497 military campaign against the Ottoman-allied Moldavian principality. The expedition ended in a near-annihilation of Polish nobility in the forests of Bucovina, a defeat so damaging it gave rise to the Polish proverb: za króla Olbrachta wyginęła szlachta — "under King Albert, the nobility perished."
This coin belongs to NBP's long-running series of Polish royal portraits, each struck in 62.2g of .999 silver. The series began in 2013 with Mieszko I and has worked methodically through the Piast and Jagiellonian dynasties.
