Poland's communist government authorized a wave of collector-focused issues in the late 1970s, and trial strikes like this one were produced by Mennica Państwowa to test die alignment, metal flow, and planchet specifications before committing to full production runs. Most were retained internally or distributed through controlled channels — very few entered the open market during the PRL period.
Mieszko I unified the Piast tribal territories and accepted baptism in 966 AD, an act that anchored Poland's ecclesiastical and political alignment with Rome rather than Byzantium. The choice of subject for a 1979 coin was anything but neutral in a state officially committed to atheism.
