Poland's postwar currency reform of October 1950 — which exchanged old zlotys at punishing rates, 100:1 for cash holdings above a minimal threshold — meant that notes issued in 1948 had an extremely short effective lifespan. Banknotes of this series were rendered nearly worthless almost overnight for anyone holding significant quantities, a deliberate mechanism to suppress wartime black-market wealth and consolidate the new communist government's economic control.
The PWPW in Warsaw had resumed domestic production by this period after the devastation of the occupation years, making the 1948 series among the first postwar issues printed entirely on home soil under the new political order.
