Aanvullende informatie

Issued to commemorate the opening of the Hotel Intercontinental in Kinshasa, this piece belongs to a suite of gold commemoratives authorized by Mobutu Sese Seko in the early years of his regime, when the newly renamed République du Zaïre was aggressively projecting national prestige through monumental architecture and international hospitality contracts. The Kinshasa Intercontinental was part of a broader push to make the capital a venue for Cold War-era summits and foreign investment.

Mintages across the 1971 Zaïre gold series were extremely low, produced largely for presentation sets and export sale rather than domestic circulation.
