The Three-River-Source region in Qinghai Province is the headwater zone of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Mekong rivers — a plateau ecosystem covering roughly 395,000 square kilometers that supplies freshwater to an estimated 700 million people downstream. China designated it a national park in 2021, the first formal approval under a new national park framework that Beijing had been developing since 2013 to consolidate fragmented nature reserves under unified federal management.
