China's large-format silver lunar issues from the 1980s were produced in extremely limited quantities during a period when the People's Bank of China was still finding its footing with collector-market coinage. The 1987 rabbit issue had a mintage of just 4,000 pieces worldwide — a figure that looks almost reckless in its restraint given the international appetite for Chinese lunar silver at the time.
