The 2007 Lunar series Pig coin marked the final year of the first 12-year cycle of China's modern gold lunar program, which the People's Bank launched in 1981. Completing a full zodiac cycle in investment-grade gold was a deliberate milestone for the program, and mintages on the final-cycle issues were kept tighter than mid-series years to reflect that.
The applied color enamel, added at the mint rather than aftermarket, distinguishes this from the standard uncolored issue struck in the same year.
