China's Lunar Gold series has been issued annually since 1981, making the Dog one of the later entries in the first full twelve-year cycle's successor run. The 2006 issue falls in the second full rotation of the series, by which point the People's Bank had firmly established these as collector instruments rather than anything approaching circulating coinage — mintages were tightly controlled and the pieces moved almost entirely through authorized distributors into domestic and overseas Chinese community markets.
The 3.1103g specification is a precise tenth-troy-ounce, a denomination structure the series shares with its fractional counterparts struck the same year in 1/20, 1/4, and 1oz weights.
