| Beschrijving keerzijde | A Western-style unicorn with a single spiralled horn and floral wreath garland around its neck stands in three-quarter profile facing right, its head turned to look right, rendered with finely detailed musculature and a flowing mane and tail. The base of the design is richly adorned with an abundant arrangement of roses and other blossoms surrounding the unicorn's hooves. The denomination 50元 appears to the left field, the Chinese legend 中·美吉祥物麒麟 arcs along the upper left, and the Latin inscription (UNICORN) is inscribed along the upper right periphery. |

China's Unicorn series launched in 1994 as a direct competitor to the Panda bullion program, targeting collectors rather than the broader bullion market. The series ran only through 1997, making the inaugural year the natural anchor of any complete set. Mintages were tightly controlled by the People's Bank of China and never approached Panda volumes.
The 1994 issue is the hardest of the four dates to source in original mint packaging.
