The flowing, energetic brushstrokes of the grass script are reproduced in fine detail against a darkened background suggestive of aged silk or paper. To the left, a tan-toned panel bears large running-script characters identifying the work, with a vertical inscription reading 中国书法艺术·唐·怀素·自叙帖 (Chinese Calligraphic Art — Tang Dynasty — Huaisu — Zi Xu Tie).
