Part of China's long-running Gold Coin series reproducing classical Chinese paintings, the 1994 issue drew from the genre of "playing children" imagery rooted in Song Dynasty court painting traditions. These small-format gold issues were produced primarily for the international collector market during a period when the People's Bank of China was aggressively expanding its commemorative program — annual thematic series multiplied sharply through the early 1990s as foreign exchange revenue from numismatic exports became a deliberate policy objective.
Mintages for this type were tightly controlled and have never been officially revised upward.
