The "Outlaws of the Marsh" series, issued across multiple years by the People's Bank of China, draws from one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature — a 14th-century work attributed to Shi Nai'an depicting 108 outlaws operating from a marshland stronghold during the Song dynasty. The 2011 release continued an ongoing collector series rather than marking any singular anniversary, a format the PBC has used extensively to sustain demand in the domestic and overseas Chinese collector markets.
