Issued as part of China's early 1990s commemorative science series, this piece honors the mathematical concept of zero — specifically China's historical contribution to its formal definition and positional use. The series was unusual for a central bank program in that it targeted abstract intellectual achievements rather than the political figures or cultural landmarks that dominated commemorative coinage of the period.
Mintage was tightly controlled, as was standard for the PBC's gold commemoratives of this era, keeping surviving populations genuinely small.
