This piece belongs to China's long-running Guilin Scenery gold series, issued through the late 1990s as part of a broader push by the People's Bank of China to capture international collector markets with regionally themed bullion. The Guilin landscape — karst formations along the Li River in Guangxi — had been the subject of sustained state promotion since the early reform era, appearing on the third-series renminbi notes before finding its way onto commemorative coinage.
