Issued to mark the twentieth anniversary of the accidental discovery of the Qin Shi Huang mausoleum complex by farmers digging a well near Xi'an in 1974, this coin appeared at a moment when Chinese commemorative gold programs were still establishing their international footing. The find itself — now understood to encompass roughly 8,000 figures across three pits — had been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site only four years before this coin was struck.
