The 2019 series was China's first comprehensive security upgrade to the renminbi family since 2005, introduced partly in response to increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting operations that had plagued the fourth series notes for years. The 50 yuan denomination had been a particular target — high enough value to be worth faking, low enough to pass without close inspection in busy retail transactions.
The colour-shifting ink on this denomination shifts between gold and green, a specification that distinguishes it from the 100 yuan note in the same series, which uses gold-to-magenta shift. A small but deliberate differentiation to prevent confusion under poor lighting conditions.
