Obverse description A finely detailed proof rendition of a section of the Great Wall of China dominates the field, depicting a prominent watchtower atop a massive stone terrace with stairways and battlements rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished background. The Chinese national legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The date 1996 appears in Arabic numerals at the base of the design in the lower exergue.

Additional information

This issue belongs to China's long-running Chinese Inventions and Discoveries series, which the People's Bank launched in 1992 to assert China's historical primacy in technologies that transformed global civilization. The stern-mounted rudder is a legitimate claim: Chinese vessels were using axial rudders by the 1st century AD, roughly a thousand years before the device appeared in European maritime records.

KM#916 carries a mintage of 2,500 pieces.
