Obverse description Central depiction of the Great Wall of China rendered in fine relief, occupying the majority of the coin's field. The wall extends across a hillside with a prominent watchtower at center. The Chinese national title 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed in Chinese characters as a legend along the upper periphery. The year of issue 1996 appears in Arabic numerals in the lower exergual area.

Reverse description Detailed depiction of Su Song's famous astronomical clock tower (水运仪象台), a landmark invention of the Northern Song dynasty, rendered in high relief at center-right of the field. A Chinese inscription identifying the subject, 吴大观 张仃设计 (design attribution), appears along the lower left, with additional legend in the left field identifying the invention.
