The Bank of Taiwan, though nominally a provincial institution, functioned as the de facto central bank of the Republic of China on Taiwan from 1949 onward — the actual Central Bank of China had been suspended. This arrangement persisted until 1961, when the Central Bank was formally reactivated in Taipei, but the Bank of Taiwan continued issuing its own currency for years afterward under legacy authority.
The Central Engraving and Printing Plant relocated from the mainland in 1949 and re-established operations in Taiwan, giving the ROC government an in-house security printing facility that underpins the entire postwar Taiwan note series.
