The Bank of Taiwan was reestablished under the Nationalist-controlled Taiwan Provincial Government in May 1946, just months after Japan's surrender ended fifty years of colonial rule. This 50 Yuan note was among the first issues of that reconstituted institution — printed domestically at the Central Engraving and Printing Plant rather than sent abroad, which was itself a deliberate assertion of administrative control over the newly recovered territory.
The timing matters: hyperinflation on the mainland was already accelerating, and the Taiwan dollar zone was kept nominally separate from the collapsing fabi currency system — a separation that would prove short-lived by 1948.
