| Reverse description | The reverse features a naturalistic depiction of a giant panda clambering playfully through bamboo, gripping a stalk with its forepaws while surrounded by finely detailed bamboo leaves that fill the field. The denomination 50元 is inscribed in the upper right field in large Chinese numerals. The commemorative legend 中国熊猫金币发行十周年纪念 (Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Issuance of Chinese Panda Gold Coins) curves along the upper border. Along the lower portion of the field, the inscriptions 含纯金1盎司 (containing 1 troy ounce of pure gold), 成色.999, and Au 1OZ confirm the coin's fineness and weight specifications. |

The 1991 Panda gold series marked ten years since the People's Bank of China launched the program in 1982 — a deliberate move to compete with the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in international bullion markets. China priced early issues aggressively, and Western collector demand outpaced domestic interest almost immediately. The anniversary year brought a reduced mintage relative to surrounding dates, a pattern that has held up in secondary market pricing.
That year also saw the last of the bamboo-forest reverse designs before the series began rotating imagery annually with greater frequency, making the 1991 issue a transitional point in the program's design history.
