Issued to mark the golden wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1997, this coin belongs to a wave of Commonwealth commemoratives produced for the occasion across dozens of issuing territories — many struck by the same handful of contract mints, Pobjoy and the Royal Mint among them. Vanuatu, an independent republic since 1980 with no constitutional tie to the Crown, participated purely as a numismatic issuer. The country had no political stake in the anniversary whatsoever.
