Vanuatu has no historical connection to Charlemagne whatsoever — the island chain was under Anglo-French Condominium rule until independence in 1980. This coin exists purely as a numismatic export product, issued for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu has produced dozens of such thematic issues, licensing foreign historical subjects to generate foreign currency revenue, a practice common among small Pacific nations with limited mint infrastructure of their own.
