Issued on the 65th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, this coin was part of Kazakhstan's broader commemorative program marking a conflict in which the Kazakh SSR contributed roughly 1.2 million soldiers to the Red Army — a staggering number relative to the republic's wartime population. Kazakhstan also served as a major relocation zone for evacuated Soviet industry, with dozens of factories dismantled and rebuilt east of the Urals during the German advance of 1941–42.
