Toleu Basenov (1909–2001) was one of Kazakhstan's most significant Soviet-era architects, responsible for shaping the monumental civic vocabulary of Alma-Ata during the postwar decades. His work navigated the ideological demands of Socialist Realism while incorporating local ornamental traditions — a balancing act that defined official architecture across the Soviet periphery. This coin was issued in the centenary year of his birth.
