Additional information

Kazakhstan issued this coin to mark the turn of the millennium while the country was barely eight years into its existence as an independent state, having only established the tenge as its national currency in 1993 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The National Bank was still a young institution navigating the transition from a command economy, and commemorative issues like this one served a dual function: marking calendar events while also building the visual and material culture of a sovereign monetary system from scratch.
