Kokshetau, the administrative center of Akmola Region, was one of several Kazakh cities commemorated in a long-running regional series issued by the National Bank beginning in 2004. The program was designed explicitly to raise civic awareness of Kazakhstan's geographic and cultural diversity during a period of aggressive nation-building following independence — a political project as much as a numismatic one.
