Aktobe is one of fourteen regional capitals honored in Kazakhstan's ongoing "Regions of Kazakhstan" commemorative series, launched to reinforce national identity across a country whose internal borders were largely redrawn after Soviet dissolution. The Aktobe oblast sits atop some of the largest chromite deposits in the world, a geological fact that shaped the city's entire industrial development under Soviet planning.
