Additional information

The tenge was introduced on November 15, 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble after Kazakhstan found itself without a functioning monetary system following the USSR's collapse — the country had been using ruble notes printed as far back as the Gorbachev era. The 1993 launch required extraordinary logistical secrecy; the new banknotes were printed in the UK and flown in covertly to prevent destabilizing speculation before the switch was announced with only a few days' notice for citizens to exchange their rubles.

This commemorative marks exactly two decades from that date.
