The Reserve Bank of Malawi issued this denomination during the long presidency of Hastings Banda, whose government maintained tight control over the national currency as part of a broader policy of economic self-reliance that kept Malawi largely isolated from regional financial integration. Banda's face appeared on virtually all Malawian currency of this period — a common practice among the continent's one-party states of the 1970s and 1980s.

Nickel brass was a practical choice for a high-value circulating coin in a low-income economy, offering durability without the cost of cupronickel. The series ran into the early 1990s as Malawi faced mounting donor pressure to democratize, which eventually produced a multiparty referendum in 1993.
