Bangladesh declared independence on March 26, 1971, but the Liberation War continued until December 16 — the date Pakistani forces surrendered, now observed as Victory Day. The fifty-year mark prompted a wave of commemorative issues across government ministries, of which this coin is one. Bangladesh Bank has issued silver commemoratives only sporadically, and the .925 fineness here is notably higher than the .500 silver used in earlier Bangladeshi commemorative programs from the 1970s and 1980s.
