50 Sucres

Ecuador's sucre had been under sustained devaluation pressure throughout the 1980s, driven by falling oil revenues and a debt crisis that forced repeated IMF interventions. By the time this 50-sucre coin entered circulation, inflation was running above 50% annually, and a denomination that had represented meaningful purchasing power a decade earlier was already becoming marginal. The shift to nickel clad steel from earlier compositions reflects direct cost-cutting pressure on the Banco Central during those years.

The series was retired when dollarization in 2000 made all sucre coinage obsolete overnight.
