Slovenia's tolar coinage was introduced in October 1991, just months after the country's declaration of independence and the brief Ten-Day War with Yugoslav federal forces. The aluminum-magnesium alloy chosen for the lowest denominations was a pragmatic response to the new state's limited monetary infrastructure — lightweight, cheap to produce, and fast to deploy through a mint relationship with the Kremnická mincovňa in Slovakia, as Slovenia had no domestic mint of its own.

The series ran until Slovenia's euro adoption on 1 January 2007, at which point all tolar coinage was demonetized simultaneously.
