Tajikistan's currency is named after the Samanid ruler Ismoil Somoni, whose dynasty governed much of Central Asia in the 9th and 10th centuries — a deliberately pre-Soviet reference point chosen when the somoni replaced the Tajik ruble in 2000 following years of hyperinflation and civil war. The 50 somoni sits in the mid-range of a series that has been gradually updated since the currency's introduction, with P#26A reflecting revisions introduced across the 2013–2017 production run rather than a single dated issue.
The security specification for this denomination is modest relative to contemporaries from neighboring central banks — watermark and thread without the foil elements found on higher values in the same series.
