Tajikistan's currency is named after the Samanid ruler Ismoil Somoni, whose dynasty governed much of Central Asia in the 9th and 10th centuries — a deliberately pre-Soviet reference point chosen when the somoni replaced the Tajik ruble in 2000 following years of hyperinflation and civil war.
