The Battle of Callao on May 2, 1866 was the last significant naval engagement between Spain and its former South American colonies — Spain's final serious attempt to reassert influence on the Pacific coast. A joint Peruvian-Chilean squadron repelled the Spanish fleet under Casto Méndez Núñez, who was wounded during the action. Peru struck this centennial commemorative exactly one hundred years after that engagement.
