The Сохранная Казна and Государственный Заёмный Банк were distinct Moscow and St. Petersburg institutions that jointly backed these deposit receipts — not banknotes in the modern sense, but written acknowledgments of silver coin held in custody. The 1841 series represented an attempt to encourage depositors to accept transferable paper in lieu of withdrawing specie directly, at a moment when the Russian state was trying to consolidate its parallel credit institutions ahead of the 1843 reform that created the unified State Credit Ruble.
Surviving examples are rare. Most were redeemed or cancelled within the decade once the reform made them obsolete.
