Additional information

Somalia's independence coinage was issued to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Somali Republic, formed in 1960 when the former Italian Trust Territory of Somalia and British Somaliland merged. The gold pieces were struck by the Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato in Rome, a natural choice given Italy's administrative history with the southern territory.

The two-year date span reflects distribution across the anniversary period rather than a change in dies.
