Somalia's elephant bullion series occupies an unusual niche: issued under license through a Liechtenstein-based trading company, these coins bear Somali authority on paper while having no practical connection to the country's monetary system, which had effectively collapsed following the civil war of the early 1990s. The arrangement is purely commercial, exploiting Somalia's nominal sovereignty to produce a marketable fractional gold product for European collectors.
