Kenya's 2019 paper series arrived at an awkward moment — the Central Bank had already committed to polymer for its higher denominations, and this 50 Shillings note on traditional cotton-rag stock was essentially a holdover issue while that transition was completed. The security specification here is notably thin for the period: a watermark alone, with none of the foil or windowed thread elements Thomas De La Rue was applying to contemporaneous African issues for other clients.
The print run of just over 12 million is modest for a workhorse denomination in an East African economy of Kenya's size.
