By 1985, Israel's economy was in freefall — annual inflation had reached approximately 450%, one of the worst hyperinflationary episodes in the country's history. The 50 Sheqalim denomination, enormous by any recent Israeli standard, was nonetheless becoming inadequate for everyday transactions almost as soon as it was struck. The government's emergency stabilization plan, implemented in July 1985, halted the spiral and led directly to the introduction of the New Sheqel the following year at a conversion rate of 1,000 to one, rendering this coin obsolete within months of issue.
