The large-type 50 sentimo was effectively a transitional relic by the time it entered circulation. Ferdinand Marcos had declared martial law in 1972 and overseen a complete recoinage program that reshaped Philippine currency through the mid-1970s; by 1983, the year this type began striking, his government was in its final crisis — Benigno Aquino was assassinated at Manila airport that August, triggering the economic collapse that would end the Marcos regime entirely by 1986.
Production continued under Corazon Aquino's restored government through 1990, after which a smaller, lighter series replaced it.
