The legend TANZANIA arcs along the upper periphery, while the date appears in the lower exergual area. Flanking the portrait on either side are sprigs of cloves, rendered in fine detail, symbolising Tanzania's principal export crop. The design is the work of engraver Christopher Ironside. |

Tanzania's shift to nickel clad steel for this denomination in 1988 was driven by the country's chronic shortage of hard currency — importing nickel-copper alloy blanks had become an untenable expense during a period when the Tanzanian shilling was losing value rapidly against the dollar. The clad composition was the cheaper option, not a technical upgrade.
