By 1936, Estonia's currency had stabilized under the gold-backed kroon introduced in 1928, but the political climate had not. Konstantin Päts had dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution in 1934, ruling by decree. This coin was struck under that authoritarian interregnum — a period when economic confidence was managed as carefully as dissent.
The nickel brass alloy was a deliberate cost-saving shift from earlier silver issues, reflecting post-Depression fiscal caution across the Baltic states. Estonia would lose the kroon entirely in 1940 with Soviet annexation, making the entire 1930s coinage series a compressed and finite run.
