Tupou VI acceded to the throne in March 2012 following the death of his brother George Tupou V, making this the first circulating coinage series to carry his effigy. Tonga's monetary system was decimalised in 1967, replacing the traditional pound-based system — the seniti denomination has existed in its current form since that reform.
