| Additional information |
Issued to mark the 85th birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, this coin was struck during a period when Tonga maintained unusually warm Commonwealth ties under Tāufaʻahau Tupou IV, who had cultivated a personal rapport with the British royal family across decades of state visits. The Queen Mother's connection to Tonga was largely ceremonial but genuine — she had visited the islands, and Tupou IV held her in considerable personal regard.
KM#100 is one of several commemorative issues Tonga produced through the 1980s as a revenue-generating exercise, many struck by the British Royal Mint on contract.
