Taufa'ahau Tupou IV was crowned in July 1967, succeeding his mother Queen Sālote Tupou III, who had died in December 1965 after a reign of nearly forty-eight years. Tonga struck a set of coronation coinage across multiple denominations to mark the occasion — among the few formal commemorative issues the kingdom had produced to that point. Tupou IV would go on to reign until 2006, making this coronation issue the opening chapter of one of the longer twentieth-century Pacific monarchies.
