| Obverse description | Three-quarter profile effigy of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV facing right, rendered in high relief. The legend 'TAUFA'AHAU TUPOU IV' curves along the upper periphery, while the date '1968' appears at the base of the portrait in the lower field. The design is executed in a formal regal style with fine detail in the facial features and attire. |

| Additional information |
This issue appeared in the same year Tonga's coinage was decimalized, replacing the old pound-shilling system under which the kingdom had operated since the late nineteenth century. The 1968 series marked the first coinage to bear Taufa'ahau Tupou IV's effigy following his accession in 1965, and the denomination structure was redesigned wholesale to align with regional Pacific trends toward decimal currency.
