Salote Tupou III ruled Tonga for 47 years and was widely beloved across the Pacific, but she gained unusual international visibility at the 1953 coronation of Elizabeth II in London — the only foreign dignitary who refused to close her carriage despite the rain, reportedly out of respect for the occasion. She died in 1965, and this 1967 issue was struck posthumously, part of a decimal coinage series introduced as Tonga modernized its monetary system ahead of full independence, which came in 1970.
The series was struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant.
