Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's accession in 1967, this coin commemorates one of the longest-reigning monarchs alive today. Brunei's currency authority has struck multiple jubilee issues over the decades, but the 2017 series represented a deliberate institutional statement — the Autoriti Monetari, established in 2011 to replace the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board, asserting its role as custodian of national commemorative coinage.
The third portrait designation distinguishes this from earlier circulation and commemorative types bearing updated effigies as the Sultan aged.
